About Retinal Treatment

In retinal diseases, early diagnosis is of great importance for protecting vision. Treatment is planned with intravitreal injection, laser and surgical methods according to the type of disease.

The retina is the light-sensitive nerve layer at the back of the eye, and damage to it is often permanent. Timely intervention is therefore decisive in conditions such as diabetic retinopathy, detachment, macular hole and epiretinal membrane.

Who Is It For and When Is It Used?

Retinal treatment is planned in the following situations:

  • Diabetic retinopathy and macular oedema: Injection and laser in vascular damage and leakage due to diabetes.
  • Macular degeneration (wet type): Intravitreal injection in abnormal vessel growth and leakage.
  • Retinal tear and detachment: Emergency laser or surgery in flashes of light, floaters and a curtain-like shadow.
  • Macular hole and epiretinal membrane: Vitrectomy in distorted vision and central vision loss.
  • Intraocular bleeding and infection: Surgical clearance in bleeding and inflammation that block vision.

Treatment Methods

The main methods used in retinal diseases:

  • Intravitreal injection therapies: May be applied in macular degeneration and diabetic retinal diseases to suppress abnormal vessels.
  • Retinal laser treatments: Can be used in diabetic retinopathy and retinal tears to seal the tear or treat abnormal vessels.
  • Vitrectomy surgery: An advanced surgery in which the vitreous gel inside the eye is cleared to treat retinal diseases; applicable in detachment, diabetic bleeding, macular hole, epiretinal membrane and intraocular infections.
  • Retinal detachment surgeries: Special surgeries that aim to reattach the retina to its place.
